An ROV is a remotely operated underwater vehicle. It is a tethered underwater robot that can maneuver in hostile or unsuitable environments while the operator can stay on land or boat. An ROV is comprised of a frame, tools and sensors, control/ display console, power distribution, tether, and a handling system.
They have separate electric motors controlling a propeller for thrust. They can also have a multiple output gear box to control multiple propellers. ROVs are equipped with robotic arms that can interact with the ocean around them. They have video cameras to record sea life and experiments. Sensors and sampling equipment are also common. The tether for the ROV gives power to the ROV and sends back data and video feed to the operator.
